Homeschooling: It's not what we do, it's how we live.

A Painted House is a Pretty House

You remember a couple of months ago, I was talking about how we were about to embark on a fantastical journey of home repair fun? Well, consider that journey well and truly begun. In the first of what will no doubt be many ‘look what we finished’ posts dealing with out on-going home makeover saga, we’ve officially painted our house!

Yes, you read that correctly, we – as in Loverly Husband and I (well, mostly Loverly Husband) – have PAINTED OUR HOUSE. I have photo-proof, even. He took a week of vacation time and spent most of it preparing to paint (seriously, like 4 days doing prep work) and all of 2 days painting, and a third on the trim.

The kids and I did school work while Dad worked outside, making minor repairs and caulking, then pressure washing the outside of the house. We all ‘helped’ him by lending our unwavering support while he sprayed the paint on. At least, I did – the kids mostly stayed inside since there was so much paint in the air.

This is the before picture. We’d scraped all the old paint off of the window frames and taped up all the windows to prepare for spraying.

I was amazed by how much primer we used vs. how much paint – twice as much primer as we calculated (plus 2 extra trips to Home Depot for more) and half as much paint as we thought we’d need (with twice as much trim color). Just goes to show you that you can’t always rely on the internet for accurate information. {wink}.

We’re far from done; in the above picture, we still had paper and tape on the windows – most of that’s gone now – and we still have to replace the screen on the side door (which opens up into our school room) and add shutters to the front of the house… then the landscaping starts.

The windows are a challenge because to previous painters just slapped paint on all the trim – and all on the glass as well – inside and out; so we’re having to painstakingly scrape each window as we go. It’s hard work, and slow-going, but the ones we’ve uncovered, scraped and cleaned shine like diamonds, so it’s worth it.

So, we’re obviously not finished, but it does look so much nicer now. Loverly Husband and I both are pretty pleased with our handiwork. Now, to get finished with as much as possible by Friday is key – I’m hosting a Scentsy party. Stay tuned for more updates as merrily we roll along!

    • Thanks! It’s called Mocha Accent, but it looks either green or brown or gray depending on the light and how close you are to it. It’s a neat color!
